Roy Laughlin Gets KDES-FM (Jan 9, 2010)From SCBA: Under the agreement announced in November of 2009, Liberman is assigning its right to buy KDES-FM in Palm Springs (CP: Redlands) in the Coachella Valley to a new company called LC Media, LLC, operated by veteran Los Angeles station manager Roy Laughlin in partnership with Gold Coast. That will give Gold Coast control of both 104.7 signals - leading to an interference-reduction agreement that will allow KDES-FM to migrate west into San Bernardino/Riverside as a class A signal without further objection. In possibly late January, the call letters and oldies format for KDES-FM will move to R&R's newly acquired radio station on 98.5, currently the home of one of the last beautiful music stations in the United States, KWXY-FM in Cathedral City, also in the Coachella Valley. KWXY's call letters and format will move to AM 1340, replacing talker KPTR. The Wires (Jan 9, 2010)Third-party stories are copyrighted by their respective owners. Starting Monday, former San Diego mayor Roger Hedgecock will be replaced by a "live and local" afternoon drive news block 4-7 p.m. weekdays - "I said in the beginning I wasn't sure if Roger Hedgecock would work, but we gave it a try and it never gained any traction," said Ed Krampf, sr. vice president and market manager for CBS Radio Los Angeles - Smooth jazz KTWV/94.7 FM The Wave replaced long-time Program Director Paul Goldstein Friday with PD Jhani Kaye, who will continue to be the PD at sister CBS station, classic hits K-Earth 101 STL Media: We get what we deserve. The lack of quality in today's media, when you boil everything down, is really our fault. A radio announcer who can't pronounce local names. Impersonal voice tracking by broadcast wannabes. Newspapers filled with typos and factual errors. Television news reports done by kids so green their ears are still wet. The problem is, management serves up crap in their lifelong quest to cut costs, but we swallow what they're serving. It's very simple, really. You could be excused for making a mistake once, say going to a store and buying something of inferior quality. But continuing to go back to that same store and supporting the merchant and the manufacturer, even when you know the quality sucks - that's inexcusable Gary Lycan: Songs we hear on the radio often leave lasting impressions. They may make us think of a long-ago romance, a wished-for relationship, or may make us jump off the sofa and want to dance. Whatever the reason, whenever we hear the song over and over, to use a cliché, the melody lingers on. But which songs in the last decade made a lasting impression on radio programmers? San Miguel. The main facility of KSIQ is changing city of license from Brawley to Campo. In Brawley, CHR KSIQ has been a Class B at 96.1 with 50-kw at 295 feet. In Campo, it's a B1 25-kw at 102 feet - much closer to the big population center of San Diego. The Imperial Valley's Tribune Weekly Chronicle says the move-out/move-in should happen around January 9, this weekend. There may be talent changes, with morning jock and GM Tony Driskill and afternoon DJ Stacy Lynn sure to remain. KSIQ's AM sister KROP, Brawley (1300) stays in the Valley, doing classic country. You guys were the reason I listened to that station every morning. From Kelly Murphy Hayes: I will not intentinally be boycotting KGB. It just so happens that the only time I listsen is in the morning to my DSC. Then the rest of the day it's CD's or whatever. They were the best morning show on the radio, hands down. I may as well remove 101.5 from my pre-sets. It has been a sad 3 days in San Diego! From Dave Cochran DSC will never be back in any Clearchannel program. They are in hot water over ratings and cost over runs. DSC was not the cause, only the victim of poorly managed stations run from some conglomerate in Tx. Sad to say, but the times are changing and radio as we know it is suffering. I do hope DSC gets back on the air... Facebook Group: Bring back Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw. Now over 1,900 members. No broadcaster wants to lose Jeff & Jer or Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw. But when the advertising marketing is tanking, a high-priced morning show is, by definition, worth less. Does radio need talent of this caliber? You bet it does. But - for better or worse - that talent will be worth exactly what radio is willing to pay for it and not a penny more. JUST IN: Gcast Discontinuing Service (Jan 5, 2010)Gcast, the home of my podcast show "The David Tanny Show" and my defunct series "Dave's Music Notes", has apparently decided to discontinue its service as it stated at the top of the pagesNo, the David Tanny Show isn't being cancelled. It may go on hiatus until a new podcast host isn't found, or just be offered by paid subscription via CD-R. "Attention: gcast.com is no longer accepting new signups, and will not be accepting new uploads as of February 1, 2010. Your existing podcasts will continue to be available."
